A local organization is joining forces with the federal government to make Long Island more affordable for veterans.

The Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Department of Housing and Urban Development are providing a voucher program for 360 rental units. The plan was discussed Wednesday at Adelphi University, where veterans were told of the many transitional and permanent housing options they have at their disposal.

John Javis, of the Mental Health Association of Nassau County, says the Northport facility serves 500 veterans each evening, but that there are thousands still considered homeless on Long Island.

The conference targeted veteran service providers, developers, builders, real estate professionals and government personnel in addition to veterans.
