Environmentalists are fighting for millions of dollars to clean up one of Long Island's polluted harbors.

A sewage treatment plant pumps about 300,000 gallons of treated sewage directly into the Northport Harbor every day. Environmentalists say the antiquated plant is the reason that the water quality in Northport Harbor has gone downhill.

The Village of Northport is upgrading the facility to meet new EPA guidelines, but they only have a fraction of the money needed to finish the job.

Today, Suffolk Legislator William Spencer helped secure a $1.5 million state grant, but the village still needs about $7 million more. Village officials hope to tap into a $48 million county fund, but say it will be a highly competitive race to get that money.
