North and South Korea have agreed to form a joint Olympic team despite technically being at war with each other.
The announcement had Dix Hills resident Suzi Kang and other Korean-Americans on the Island thinking about the possibility of peace between the North and the South.
"It could be good because it could make the country more united," said Suzi Kang, of Dix Hills.
After the two sides met on Wednesday, it was announced that the rival countries would march together at the opening ceremony under a common flag.
"Anything that turns down the heat is a good thing," said Long Island University political science professor Amy Freedman.
She says the unprecedented cooperation could fade after the Olympics, but it is an important first step.
"North and South Korea being able to appear together in the Olympics tells us very little about a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. There are enormous issues at stake and I don't think we're going to resolve most of those any time soon," says Freedman.
The two sides will form a joint North and South Korean Women's Ice Hockey Team. Prior to the games, skiers from both nations will train together in North Korea.
