The South Huntington School District has decided to temporarily stop serving beef to its students.
The move comes after the government recently recalled 143 million pounds of beef. The recall was due to undercover video that showed sick cows being pushed into a slaughterhouse in California with forklifts.
According to district spokesperson Steve Bartholomew, officials learned of the recall during winter break and immediately pulled cases of meat that were included in the recall. Bartholomew says now the schools have gone a step further to be extra safe.
In a message posted on its Web site, the district says it has contacted all of its vendors to find out the source of its beef. The district says it will not serve any beef until it can verify its origin.
The district is the first school district on Long Island to ban beef due to the recall.
