A recent News 12/Hofstra poll asked residents what they thought the primary reason was for installing speed cameras at Long Island schools.

Nearly half the people answered to "collect more money for local government." About 40 percent said to "protect school children."

As News 12 reported, County Executive Ed Mangano asked to borrow $6.5 million for flashing lights at speed zone signs to make them more noticeable. Legislator Judy Jacobs says that while lawmakers approve of the flashing lights, they do not like the idea of borrowing money to pay for it.

Nassau lawmakers say they're assessing the need to borrow the money for the flashing lights. They say they have no idea when that decision will be made.
