Nassau police say a newborn baby was abandoned in a Manhasset hospital Thursday morning, but its mother did not break the law.
According to police, a woman left her one-day-old girl in a restroom on the labor and delivery floor at North Shore University Hospital just after 9 a.m. Police say the woman contacted the Children of Hope Safe Haven Program before giving birth to the 6-pound, 2-ounce girl in her home, and was instructed to leave the infant at the hospital. Authorities say the woman abided by a New York state law, which allows new mothers to legally leave their babies in the hands of a responsible adult, rather than abandon it. Police also say the baby is doing well.
A mother who participates in the Children of Hope program has 24 hours to reverse her decision and reclaim the child. Children of Hope can be reached at 1-877-796-HOPE.
