Some Long Island lawmakers are saying that throwing anything at police, including water, should be considered criminal.
The proposition comes after several videos went viral of people drenching NYPD officers in Harlem and Brooklyn.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone proposed state legislation Sunday to protect first responders from those kinds of attacks.
The proposal calls for anyone who throws, sprays or douses water or any other substance on a public safety member to be penalized.
“An attack on a police officer is an attack on all officers,” says Bellone. “And attacks on police officers represent attacks on all of us, on public safety, on the rule of law.”
Massapequa Assemblyman Mike LiPetri proposed similar state legislation Saturday. Under his proposal, offenders could get up to four years behind bars.
