New gun
control measures passed in New York back in July go into effect today.
Gun owners
will now not be allowed to carry firearms into a variety of new places.
The law also changes the requirements for those who want
to carry a firearm for self-defense.
There are many places now deemed a gun-free zone for those
who have a concealed carry permit – they include restaurants, bars, libraries,
public transportation, entertainment venues, houses of worship, public
demonstrations and Times Square in New York City.
Officials say if anyone is caught carrying a gun in those
places they will face felony charges.
In addition, anyone looking to get a concealed carry permit
will now have to go through a more extensive training process, background
checks and permits need to be renewed every three years.
