Bridgeport officials unveiled the new East Side Senior Center on Saturday.
Mayor Joe Ganim joined state and local leaders in dedicating the venue.
He said the new center on Putnam Street will give seniors a place to socialize and receive referrals, education and supportive services.
Officials said the building, which used to be Fire Engine Company No. 10, was recently renovated for this new purpose.
"The beauty of the building has been recaptured and really makes it not just a great senior center, but almost like a museum-type of piece of city structure that goes back over 100 years," Ganim said.
"All of our senior centers are just as important throughout the city and it's free membership -- you don't have to pay! You come, you exercise, you make new friends, you meet a new family member. You know, this is really important," said Bridgeport Council President Aidee Nieves.
City Council Member Maria Valle says the new center, which was paid with state and federal dollars, will help seniors with everything from nutrition to transportation, to health and wellness education.
