Nassau
County Executive Laura Curran announced the opening of a new rapid COVID-19
testing facility in the Five Towns area due to an uptick in cases.
The
drive-thru testing site, a partnership between the county and Mount Sinai South
Nassau Hospital, will be located at the Five Towns Community Center in
Lawrence.
Appointments
are required, and the hours of operation will be Monday through Friday 8
a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The
rapid tests produce results as quick as five minutes. The county says they plan
on keeping the testing site open for at least four weeks.
Officials
say progress is being made in the area since COVID-19 restrictions went into
effect in parts of Lawrence, Inwood and Cedarhurst. Those communities are
outside the red zone but fall into the outer zones due to increases in
infections.
As of Tuesday,
rates in the Five Towns have dropped slightly. However, the rate of
infection is still three to five times higher than the county average. The
county also reported a slight uptick in cases in Woodmere.
Executive Curran's briefing, Oct. 20, 2020
Nassau
officials stressed that COVID-19 testing is free, and immigration status is
irrelevant. To make an appointment, people can call 516-390-2888.
During
her briefing Tuesday morning, Curran announced there are currently 62
hospitalized with COVID-19 in Nassau, 17 in the ICU and 10 on ventilators. The
county has held between 1% and 1.5% positivity rate for months now, which
Curran called a “significant achievement.”
