A new audit from the state comptroller’s office states that poor oversight and weak outreach delayed the distribution of funds for a housing program for disabled veterans on Long Island and throughout New York State.

According to the audit, $3.3 million was awarded to the state over the course of three years, but only 36% of the money was used, leaving many veterans waiting for help.

The Access to Home for Heroes’ mission is to offer veterans financial help for emergency repairs and accessibility modifications so they can remain in their own homes instead of moving to nursing or care facilities.
