Huntington residents say the town has yet to fix a dangerous road after several complaints.
Cherry Lane is a residential street in the Town of Huntington. Neighbors say drivers treat the road as a cut-through from Route 25A to and from Greenlawn Road.
Long-time residents of Cherry Lane say GPS navigation apps have routed more vehicles, including heavy trucks, on the road over the last decade, which has caused lots of traffic. Many residents also say they've been almost hit by speeding cars while they walked along the road.
Neighbors say they have asked the town of Huntington to lower the speed limit, restrict commercial trucks or add stop signs to reduce the traffic, but that they haven’t seen any changes made yet.
However, town officials say they have just completed a traffic study of the road and immediately asked Suffolk police to patrol more often before making any major changes.
“We are going to continue monitoring this, look at the data results, and determine what type of action is appropriate after reviewing the data,” says Town Supervisor Chad Lupinacci.
Neighbors say they hope the study results in a change to slow down or reduce traffic on the street. “It is a beautiful area, a beautiful neighborhood and I'd love my kids to be able to go outside and not have to worry about them getting hit by a car,” says resident Dina Renart.
Huntington officials tell News 12 they hope to have the results of the study and give any recommendations to the town board before the end of the year.
