Neighbors are raising concerns about food left behind at a now-closed supermarket on North Broadway, saying it has created odors and is attracting animals.

Residents say bags of discarded meat and produce were thrown into a dumpster behind Frank’s Fairway after the store shut down last Monday, Oct. 13.

“You can imagine the smell now come tomorrow,” one neighbor told News 12, pointing to the dumpster, with an open lid.

“To flat up leave us with the store full of food is wrong,” said Ann Spellman, who lives nearby.

Several people in the area told News 12, both on and off camera, that they’re concerned about what’s been left inside the store. Others have been posting about the situation on neighborhood social media apps.

The Town of Oyster Bay told News 12 it “issued violations and has a pending court appearance against the two owners.” The town did not specify what the violations are for.

The building owner declined to speak on camera Thursday but told News 12 the town’s claims and violations are “unfounded.”

“I don’t know when they are going to pick this up,” Spellman said of the food left behind.

According to the town, the supermarket owner is not allowed inside the building unless for a health inspection, as stated under the lease. The town said state approval is needed for that inspection.

Town officials said the store owner and the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets are working to address the situation and remove the food.
