A Middle Island man?s heroism helped save his neighbor?s burning house from being destroyed Wednesday. Firefighters say the blaze broke out after a woman fell asleep with Christmas candles still burning. The fire gutted part of the Cedar Heights Drive home, but could have been much worse if it wasn?t for Michael Beam, who raced into action to battle the blaze. Beam says he used a hose from his home to douse the flames until firefighters arrived. The woman, who was the only one home at the time, made it out safely. Fire officials, however, say she will not be able to move back in until after Christmas.
