The Nassau County Legislature voted unanimously Wednesday evening to allow PSEG Long Island to pay only part of its property tax bill.
The utility says its property tax bill should not go up by any more than 2 percent each year, citing the LIPA Reform Act of 2013. It has refused to pay the $1.4 million difference. The vote allows the county to collect most of the taxes it is owed.
Democrats say they were concerned if PSEG Long Island didn't pay the full amount it was being billed, school districts would have no choice but to make up the difference by raising taxes on homeowners. Tax bills are scheduled to be mailed out Thursday.
PSEG LI is also asking for a $387 million rate increase over three years.
