Nassau County veterans are concerned about their credit after personal information was stolen from the Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA) in Washington, D.C.
Officials say a VA employee downloaded personal information for 26.5 million veterans to a laptop that was then stolen from his home. The employee, whose identity is being withheld, has been placed on administrative leave. The FBI and VA inspector general are investigating the incident.
Experts advise anyone whose identity may be compromised to report suspicious activity and check personal credit reports. However, Nassau County Clerk Maureen O?Connell says these actions won?t prevent consumer fraud.
