Officials in Nassau have unveiled a $65 million
affordable housing complex in a ceremony to honor the county’s first elected African
American court judge.
The
New Moxie Rigby building was officially unveiled in Freeport this morning.
The 100-unit apartment building is home to
residents who lived in the old Moxie Rigby building across the street that was
damaged from Superstorm Sandy.
The building is named after Freeport resident Moxie Rigby, who was the first Black district court judge elected in
Nassau.
"It's the largest affordable housing development in Nassau. The original
was under flood conditions. Cost to fix was tremendous. We've upgraded, raised
apartments 12 feet off the ground. Flood proof for 100 years. The old equipment
really needed substantial repairs," says Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy.
Residents moved in to the new building about 15 months ago, and the old building is expected
to be torn down in the future.
