The Suffolk County Sheriff's Department has a new space for their Domestic Violence Bureau.

The space is at the District Court in Central Islip, which was renovated to accommodate the increase in staffing and new responsibilities.

The new office was dedicated to Kathy Bishop.

Bishop was fatally shot in 1992 by her estranged husband days after she tried getting an order of protection.

Her death prompted county officials to task the sheriff's department to start delivering orders of protection instead of the person seeking it.

"She wanted an order of protection. She told them that he had guns and threatened her and she just died and that's why we're here," says Kathy's son Thomas Dinkelman.

"These deputies have a very dangerous job, often going into the homes of those with weapons and other volatile unknown situations," says Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. "This year alone, we have already served close to 5,000 orders of protection."

Kathy's family thinks the changes made and the bureau has made a big impact.

"It's very emotional. It gets me all choked up and I just want to burst out crying," says Dinkelman.
