Nassau County's health commissioner met with the heads of local agencies that serve seniors Friday to let them know state cuts could be coming.
In early October, Nassau County sent out a memo to non-profit groups that contract services to seniors telling them to freeze staff hiring and client additions. The county attributed the move to the state?s dire financial situation.
?We've never seen anything like this,? Anthony Muller, of Catholic Charities in Rockville Centre, says. ?Never seen a memorandum from the county asking us to freeze services across the board.?
Herb Ruben, who works with Alzheimer?s patients at Peninsula Counseling, says it breaks his heart to have to turn people away from services, but it?s become necessary.
