Police in Nassau and Suffolk counties are boosting patrols at synagogues and other houses of worship in the wake of a deadly shooting at a synagogue in California.
Police say there are no known threats against synagogues on Long Island at this time, but they have added extra security as a precaution.
California authorities say a 19-year-old gunman opened fire Saturday at Chabad of Poway, outside of San Diego. There were about 100 people inside at the time. A 60-year-old woman was killed, and a rabbi and two others were injured, including a child.
Police in California say the shooter may be charged with a hate crime and he is also being investigated in connection with an arson attack in March at a nearby mosque.
Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
