With hurricane season in full swing, Nassau County is making sure people with special needs have adequate help to evacuate in case of an emergency.
The county is setting up special needs shelters ? the first of their kind on the island. More than 100 volunteers attended a training session at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville Sunday. They learned how to assist people in wheelchairs, the elderly and those needing medical care.
"Our special needs clients are going to take longer to register," said Eileen Scanlon of the Nassau County Department of Health. "Some of them might be hearing impaired. Some of them might be visually impaired. We will have special equipment to lift patients and move patients."
The county will be conducting volunteer drills for the next two months.
