Woman who pleaded guilty in death of beloved grandfather begins jail term

An Elmont man is facing kidnapping and assault charges after barricading himself and a victim inside his home during a police standoff.

Officers responded to Locustwood Boulevard around 1 a.m. on Friday.

They say 30-year-old Lyadell Sutherland refused to let a 22-year-old woman leave his home. He also allegedly hit repeatedly and took away her cellphone.

Police eventually gained access to the house and arrested Sutherland. The victim was treated at a nearby hospital.
