Nassau police: Emergency in the water turns out to be old shipwreck off coast of Tobay Beach

Nassau police say members of their Aviation Unit and Marine Bureau, along with the U.S. Coast Guard raced to a call for an emergency in the water off the South Shore, but it turned out to be a false alarm.
Nassau police tell News 12 that call came in for an overturned boat 2 miles south of Jones Beach Tuesday at 10:51 a.m.
Once they got there, police say there wasn't an emergency or capsized boat - - it was an old shipwreck.
“The Roda wreck is the remains of a 315-foot long cargo ship that sunk off the coast of Tobay in 1908. It is a very popular spot for fishing, diving and spearfishing. In the fall, we see many people fishing for striped bass off the wreck. The Roda remains an important part of our colorful history that makes our town so special.” said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino.
News 12 spoke with a North Babylon man who searches for metal at Tobay Beach about the old shipwreck.
"I was always wondering what that was...I'm pretty amazed...it's going to fall apart and we're going to see lots of pieces, a lots of shard metal." said Andrew Manzella.
