A grassroots organization is working to make sure dozens of trees along South Oyster Bay Road do not get cut down.
Nassau County is planning to cut down nearly 200 trees in an effort to repair sidewalk damage caused by their roots. A judge recently lifted a restraining order allowing the cutting to continue along the roadway.
Operation Stomp, organized by Tanya Lukasick, has collected around 2,600 signatures in an effort to save the trees.
She says cutting these trees sets a dangerous precedent and puts 75 roads in Nassau County at risk of losing trees.
The group protested yesterday, asking the county to look into alternatives to cutting the trees. Lukasick says the group is talking to their attorneys about appealing the judge's decision to allow the county to resume cutting down trees.
The county says the plan is to replace the trees they cut down.
