The Nassau Community College Board of Trustees approved the college’s new budget in a vote on Tuesday night.
The nearly $184 million budget does not increase tuition, but it consolidates over 20 departments into just six.
The vote passed 8–0, despite concerns from the NCC Federation of Teachers that it is disproportionately harmful to students and faculty of color.
According to teachers, the new budget fails to restore funding to programs such as theatre & dance, biology and nursing.
The college’s administration says this budget supports students, faculty and staff of all programs of study, and the comments mentioned by the federation leadership are disingenuous and part of their false narrative.
The federation says they’ll keep fighting it.
