Nassau and Suffolk police departments are taking steps in the department to raise awareness after another NYPD policer died by suicide on Wednesday.
This is the ninth NYPD officer this year that has died by suicide, and the second in the past few days.
Police have identified Long Island native Robert Echeverria as the latest NYPD officer to die by suicide. Officials say it's unclear why the 56-year-old shot himself in his Laurelton home.
Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder says officers are encouraged to ask for help. He says that every officer in the Nassau County Police Academy will get 16 hours of wellness training.
Suffolk County Commissioner Geraldine Hart says every officer in Suffolk County will now get a full day of Officer Suicide Awareness Training.
Hart says Suffolk police also just launched an interdepartmental website that lists all resources available to officers who may be struggling.
Both commissioners say any calls asking for help are confidential.
