Thousands of Long Island Muslims gathered in Uniondale on Wednesday for a prayer service to mark the end of a Ramadan, one of the holiest months for followers of the faith.
Long Island Muslim leaders say this year's Ramadan observances were marred by the deadly shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando by a gunman who professed to be a follower of the Islamic faith.
Sheik Ibrahim Negm delivered the sermon to encourage fellow Muslims to speak out against radicalization.
"If it is coming from our people, we have to take ownership. We have to make sure these kind of radical ideas does not spread in the minds of young people."
Dr. Isma Chaudhry, the head of the Islamic Center of Long Island, says the community is fearful of retaliation and as a result, attendance at area mosques is down.
