Several animals were killed during a house fire on Friday in Prospect Park, according to officials. Several animals were killed during a house fire on Friday morning in Prospect Park.
"We had approximately nine dead cats,” said Prospect Park Fire Chief Doug Struyk. "They've been taken by Animal Control. We rescued 20 cats and four dogs."
No people were killed in the fire, according to Struyk.
Crews had been on scene all morning for the fire that broke out along Fairview Avenue between North 16th and North 17th streets. The fire broke out just before 9 a.m., according to Struyk. The fire was already put out when News 12 arrived around 10:30 a.m.
Chief Struyk says the fire originated from the back of the home on the second floor.
The house is tucked infrom the street, but broken windows and a charred top can be spotted.
“It's inhabitable, so they can't live here because the fire damage was so bad on the second floor that it collapsed,” said Struyk. “So, they're all going to be put up by the Red Cross into a hotel." As of Friday morning, the chief says the investigation is done but he's still waiting on the final report.
Two people have been displaced as a result, and the American Red Cross is assisting the pair.
