The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced a plan Wednesday to beef up security on the Long Island Rail Road.
According to the MTA proposal, federal homeland security officers, specially trained dogs and MTA police officers would constitute the majority of the security additions. Nassau and Suffolk police would also be deployed when practical.
Although the plan is not a reaction to a specific terrorist threat, MTA board member Mitch Pally and acting LIRR President Ray Kenny would welcome it should federal authorities give their blessing.
"In my opinion, anything we can do to make the system more secure is beneficial," Pally said.
Added Kenny: "I think they'll very much enhance our environment."
MTA officials said, if the plan is enacted, the 280,000 daily LIRR passengers should not expect a fare increase in 2007.
