The MTA board has approved a reorganization plan that could lead to hundreds of job cuts.
The MTA, which runs New York City's subways and buses along with the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad, faces massive projected budget deficits, expected to hit $1 billion in coming years.
Officials say the transformation plan, which was prepared by an external consulting firm, could save the MTA up to $530 million a year.
Officials referred to the approved plan as a blueprint, which calls for as many as 2,700 job cuts across the MTA. Most of the job cuts are expected to target non-union administrative roles, but the MTA chairman did not say if union jobs would be untouched.
The head of a union representing LIRR workers tells News 12 in a statement, "Our represented work force is already overburdened with the aggressive projects in place. Any possibility of layoffs or cuts to our workers would be a disaster for our riders."
A majority of the job cuts are expected to happen in the next six to nine months. MTA officials say the transformation blueprint could change.
The agency's board was mandated by the state to come up with a reorganization plan by the end of this month.
