The MTA announced Wednesday that it intends to raise fares for the sixth time since 2008.
MTA chairman Tom Prendergast says under the proposal, some one-way LIRR tickets could go up just over 6 percent. However, the MTA says most fares will see increases of less than 4 percent.
The MTA says that would constitute its smallest increase since 2009, when it adopted the practice of raising fares every two years.
At the Sayville station, the leader of an LIRR commuters advocacy group said the MTA should do more if it charges more.
"They could improve on-time performance, they could improve maintenance, they could improve car cleanliness and they could improve communication," says Peter Haynes, of the LIRR Commuters Campaign.
There will be a series of public hearings on the proposed rate hikes next month. If approved, the hikes would go into effect in mid-March.
