Elderly and handicapped Long Island residents that get around by bus may have to dig deeper into their pockets. An MTA plan would double the fare for handicapped riders from $3.50 to $7. The plan would also change the age that an individual qualifies for a senior citizen fare from 60 to 65.Under the plan, the MTA would raise the base the base bus fare from $2 to $3.50.The MTA has reportedly said the increases are due to Nassau County failing to meet its contractual obligations. Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi has disputed that argument. The proposed fare hikes would not go into effect until March. A series of public hearings will take place next year to let residents weigh in on the possible fare increases.
