(AP) - Philomena Gotti, the mother of thelate Gambino crime boss John Gotti, has died at age 96.
The death was confirmed Wednesday by Charles Carnesi, a lawyerfor her grandson John "Junior" Gotti.
Newsday, which reported the death on its Web site, citedrelatives as saying she died of natural causes at her home inValley Stream, Long Island, on Tuesday night.
Known to family and friends as Fanny, Philomena Gotti died oneday before her grandson was due in federal court in Florida onracketeering charges.
She and her husband, John J. Gotti, had 16 children. Five oftheir sons were involved in the mob, with John, the so-calledTeflon Don, achieving the most notoriety.
He became boss of the Gambino family in 1985 and went to prisonin 1992 on federal racketeering charges. He died in 2002.
