A Centerport mom is accused of murder after a wrong-way crash that claimed the life of her 9-year-old son.
Kerri Bedrick was indicted on 21 charges. Bedrick was allegedly high, driving the wrong way and trying to escape police on the Southern State last month. That's when prosecutors say the 32-year-old caused a four-car crash that claimed the life of her son Eli Henrys.
“It's a nightmare and she was only on prescription medications," says Diane Bedrick, the maternal grandmother of Eli.
Prosecutors say Bedrick admitted to being on methamphetamine at the time of the crash.
The Centerport woman's attorney claims his client—who suffers from spina bifida, narcolepsy and cataplexy - was prescribed that medication.
Prosecutors stated in court that a Suffolk deputy sheriff attempted to guide Bedrick’s car off the Southern State Parkway before the crash. She allegedly went around them and was doing 100 mph in the wrong direction.
State troopers and a deputy sheriff found Bedrick’s 9-year-old son unconscious still buckled in the back seat. They tried to save him, but Eli ultimately succumbed to fatal blunt force injuries at the hospital, according to officials.
Bedrick pleaded not guilty to the charges she is facing, and if convicted, faces 25 years to life in prison.
