A mother and daughter who were rescued while kayaking in the Long Island Sound in July thanked the officers who rescued them Friday.
News 12 previously reported that Noreen McLoughlin and her 19-year-old daughter, Dana, were stranded on their double kayak in the Long Island Sound for more than two hours before officers came to their rescue back on July 19.
Marine Bureau officers Christopher DeFeo and Anthony Chin helped with the rescue.
Marine Bureau officers say they've seen fun trips out on the water turn into tragedies all too often. They say people have to be cautious because some of Long Island's waterways have very strong currents and it can be dangerous.
Back in 2011, a Suffolk father and NYPD officer drowned while kayaking on the Nissequogue with his young son.
Authorities say kayakers must always wear a life jacket under state law.
They also recommend bringing a flashlight, whistle, a VHF radio. They say kayakers should plan a route and share it with a friend or family member before heading out.
