The Town of Brookhaven is the first town in Suffolk County to unroll mobility mats that help physically challenged residents easily get onto the sand.
Selden resident Jason Soricelli says it has taken about four years for Corey Beach in Blue Point to acquire the mobility mats. He was in a dirt bike accident 12 years ago that left him paralyzed from the waist down.
"Thanks to the Parks Department of the Town of Brookhaven we were able to get it in," says Soricelli. "I worked really hard on this and it's a project that we succeeded with."
The mats, which enable physically challenged people to move freely on the sand, will be at the beach throughout the end of the summer.
The Town of Brookhaven also has mobility mats in West Meadow Beach and Cedar Beach.
