Two military moms are making sure active service members and veterans know how appreciated they are on Long Island.

Jeanine Walther says she was inspired by Main Street in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, where banners were hanging on the light posts honoring veterans.

Walther teamed up with another Navy mother, Carolyn Mormino, to get similar banners up in the Town of Babylon.

Mormino's son, Matthew Russo, is a Navy corpsman stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

"It's a lot of pride, it’s a lot of worry,” Mormino told News 12.

She and Walther started their research in May on how to get the project done and are building support among the public and elected officials.

Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, an Army veteran, says she is on board with the project.

"As we speak, our family members are in harm’s way, so that helps us to remember," says Gordon.

The duo hopes to get the first banners hung in front of Babylon's Town Hall once it’s approved by officials. With hundreds of veterans in the area, the banners would be replaced with a new one every month.

The Village of Lynbrook also uses banners on its Main Street to honor veterans.
