Meals on Wheels program may run out of gas

A program that provides hundreds of senior citizens on Long Island with hot meals right at their doors may soon be scrapped. Meals on Wheels currently provides some 650 elderly Brookhaven residents with food five days a week. The Red Cross, which operates the program, says it is no longer able to serve Suffolk County, citing financial pressures and cost overruns. The Red Cross also says it's trying to focus on its main mission of providing disaster relief. County Executive Steve Bellone (D-Suffolk) says he's hoping to find a way to keep the wheels moving. "We are going to work together with the Town of Brookhaven and we'll be speaking with the American Red Cross and working out a solution so that we can deliver these services," he says.
