Matt Hammer
Matt Hammer is the morning meteorologist for News 12 Westchester and News 12 Hudson Valley
Hammer attended Ward Melville High School (GO PATRIOTS!) and is a graduate of Stony Brook University where he studied meteorology and broadcast journalism. He has been working with News 12 since 2011 and started as a freelancer for News 12 Traffic and Weather right out of college. While in college, Hammer worked as an intern at WABC-TV in New York City and was mentored by Meteorologists Bill Evans, Jeff Smith and Lee Goldberg. Hammer held numerous freelance positions at WLNY-TV 10/55 while going to school and interning in New York City. His first on-air weather forecasts came at the age of 19 on WLNY-TV 10/55.
From a very young age, whether it was the thrill of a summer thunderstorm or the anticipation of an incoming winter storm, Hammer was fascinated by all things weather and would always be eager to explain the weather patterns to his friends and family members. That being said, Hammer remembers a story from his early childhood days when his grandmother told him he would be on television talking about weather one day. "I told her - emphatically - 'NO WAY!'" Hammer said. "You see - I was the very, very shy guy growing up and while I loved all visual aspects of weather and storytelling, television was the last thing on my mind. It's certainly funny how things change!"
When Hammer is not engulfed in the weather, he enjoys listening to modern country music, plays guitar and is a passionate Mets, Jets and Knicks fan.
You can see Hammer regularly from 5 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. weekday mornings on News 12 in addition to hearing his weather reports on News 12 Traffic and Weather - Optimum Channel 61.
