A Mastic Beach man was one of two Marines killed in a car crash in North Carolina.

Nicholas Buscarnera, 19, and a fellow Marine who was also from New York were found in a vehicle that was submerged and upside-down in a canal. They were found earlier this week.

Both of the men had been stationed at Camp Lejeune.

Authorities say the accident was caused by excessive speed.

Buscarnera was a graduate of William Floyd High School and spent four years in the ROTC program there.

The William Floyd Board of Education says flags on district buildings will be flown at half staff from Monday through Sunday of next week.
