Man who stabbed 2 women, raped 2-year-old gets 26 years to life in prison
The suspected MS-13 gang member behind a string of crimes on Long Island was sentenced Wednesday to 26 years to life in prison.
Tommy Alvarado-Ventura, 33, pleaded guilty to stabbing a woman outside of a Hempstead bar, as well attacking his girlfriend and beating and raping her 2-year-old daughter. The crimes happened in March 2017. The woman who survived the bar stabbing was present in court Wednesday.
The suspect addressed the court before sentencing, saying he was sorry and claiming he had been doing drugs and drinking to the point at which he "blacked out." The judge told him that was "frightening" because it means "that violence is within you."
Alvarado-Ventura denied being an MS-13 member, but the judge said it's "irrelevant" and that "despicable is the only label that should be attached to you."
Alvarado-Ventura's sister and brother-in-law came to court but asked to have their faces concealed. They also brought Ventura's young daughter and son. The children sat as their father was sentenced and prosecutors described the rape of the toddler in graphic detail.
Prosecutors say Alvarado-Ventura is in the U.S. illegally and has been deported four times. He will be deported again after serving his prison sentence.
