A man who sold THC gummies to a Suffolk County student in 2025 was sentenced to prison on Tuesday.
Wilmer Castillo Garcia, 24, a Guatemalan national, was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to criminal sale of a controlled substance and endangering the welfare of a child.
As News 12 previously reported, the defendant arranged the sale of tetrahydrocannabinol gummies over Instagram in March 2025, which were subsequently ingested by 12 William Floyd Middle School students.
All of the victims were hospitalized after falling ill from eating the substance, according to the Suffolk District Attorney’s office.
Additionally, Castillo Garcia sold cocaine and marijuana to an undercover law enforcement officer in May of that same year, officials say.
After being released on his own recognizance following that second arrest, the man was found by the Canada Border Services Agency in Lewiston, New York, trying to flee the country.
Castillo Garcia’s prison sentence will be followed by two years of post-release supervision, and he will be taken into ICE custody, according to the Suffolk DA.
