Police say a man was killed in a hit-and-run in East New York only an hour into the new year.

The 68-year-old was struck by a vehicle just before 1 a.m. while walking across Linden Boulevard at Ashford Street.

Authorities say EMS took him to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The Department of Transportation says the city recorded its fewest traffic deaths on record in 2025. Just days into the new year, this hit-and-run is already raising new concerns about road safety.

“That’s crazy,” said Kaleb Spencer, an East New York resident. “A 68-year-old elderly man, he lost his life for something like that. Who knows how long he would have lived for? You never know.”

Despite the speed cameras and 25 mph signs on Linden Boulevard, multiple cars could be seen zooming by.

“That triggers more people to speed even more because once they pass that camera,” said Spencer. “People speed faster because they know there's no more cameras all the way until Pennsylvania.”

Police have not yet said if the person behind the hit-and-run was speeding.

No arrests have been made.
