A Mastic mother claims the man who killed her son in an admitted DUI crash 15 months ago is getting away with murder.
Maureen Meier says a judge will be giving 28-year-old Thomas Mallin a free ride if she sentences him next month to five years probation, as planned. Mallin pleaded guilty last month to manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence in the death of Meier's only son, William. The felony Mallin confessed to warrants a five to 15-year sentence, but Meier says the judge plans to give him a slap on the wrist. Meier says Mallin left her son "to die like a dog on the side of the road."
A court spokesperson says the judge is waiting for a probation and psychiatric report before next month's sentencing hearing. However, Meier has begun a letter-writing campaign to the judge in an effort to change her mind.
