A man who pleaded guilty last month to murdering a teen at a Nassau County wedding 17 years ago has been sentenced to 19 years to life in prison.
Police say Balkumar Singh got into an argument on the dance floor at a wedding in Hicksville. They say he left the party, waited outside with a gun and shot 19-year-old Abzal Khan seven times.
Singh fled the country after the shooting, and was featured in a 2009 episode of "America's Most Wanted."
He was arrested in the spring in Trinidad after being a fugitive for 16 years.
"Balkumar Singh savagely murdered an innocent young man in front of scores of wedding guests and immediately fled the country," Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said in a statement. "This defendant stayed one step ahead of the law for 16 years, but thanks to our law enforcement partners from around the globe, we were able to bring him to justice."
Michael Walsh, the chief of the Major Offense Bureau with the DA's office, says the office will try to help the victim's family in seeing justice is carried out.
"That means working with them to make pleas to the parole board to keep the defendant incarcerated for as long as the law will allow," Walsh says.
