Some MacArthur Airport travelers were met with heightened security Sunday after a string of overseas attacks.
Although no specific threat was issued for the United States, airports took notice of two attempted car bombings in London and an incident with a car being rammed into part of a Glasgow, Scotland airport.
"We're doing some random checks of cars that come in the drive area of the terminal," MacArthur official Eric Hofmeister said.
Extra patrols were also visible at the Islip airport and officials had a tow service on hand to haul away unattended vehicles in the passenger drop-off area.
At nearby John F. Kennedy International Airport, a package of cologne briefly forced the evacuation of the American Airlines terminal Sunday.
A suspicious package, which was eventually deemed safe, also forced the evacuation of a terminal at London's Heathrow Airport Sunday.
Meanwhile, British police announced raids and the arrest of a fifth suspect in the three incidents that they are calling al-Qaida-related.
One of the attacks occurred Saturday when two men drove a flaming Jeep Cherokee into Glasgow International Airport in Scotland. No travelers were injured in the attack. Friday, authorities thwarted two car bomb attacks in central London.
