Actor Luke Perry's death is raising awareness about strokes and those who are at risk.
The "Beverly Hills, 90210" teen heartthrob of the '90s, who went on to inspire and attract a whole new generation of "Riverdale" fans, died Monday morning after suffering a massive stroke.
Erica Mansfield and her husband, of Rockville Centre, knew something wasn't right when she was unable to say certain words, including "computer." The couple rushed to NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, where Mansfield, a personal trainer who just turned 53 years old, was told she suffered a stroke. Perry was 52 when he died.
Dr. Shazia Alam, of NYU Winthrop Hospital, says smoking, diet and having diabetes are stroke risk factors. Alam says younger patients are at a higher risk of complications due to swelling and compression.
Doctors say Mansfield could be discharged as early as Wednesday. Mansfield said she was feeling great.
In addition to slurred speech or loss of words, doctors say the early signs of stroke include drooping on one side of the face and muscle weakness in the arms. If that occurs, they say to dial 911 immediately for help.
