A hero Marine from Sag Harbor was laid to rest Monday.Lance Cpl. Jordan Haerter, 19, died in Iraq last week. The U.S. military told Haerter's family that he was killed firing at suicide bombers in order to save others.As Haerter's body returned Saturday, police cars lined the Southern State by Route 110 with officers saluting in honor. Firefighters also paid tribute, draping an American flag on a truck near William Floyd Parkway. Mourners, some who knew Haerter, others who didn?t, stood in the rain.
Haerter was laid to rest at Oakland Cemetery surrounded by veterans who served in other conflicts. He was the first person to die in combat operation from Sag Harbor since World War II.
Haerter is being remembered by the close-knit Sag Harbor community as a friendly and sweet young man. 19-year-old Sag Harbor Marine killed in Iraq
