State officials in New York are changing what it takes to become a high school graduate under a new framework approved by the Board of Regents.
The program, called "Portrait of a Graduate," emphasizes civic engagement, critical thinking and creativity as key qualities students must demonstrate to earn a diploma, a board member said.
The shift will take place after Regents exams are phased out.
Instead of one major test, students may complete projects or take exams throughout the year.
The goal is to make the learning process more student-focused.
The program will begin in two years.
