This weekend's storm is expected to make getting around difficult and dangerous, so town trucks are loading up on salt and sand to treat the roads.
"It's something that we're watching very carefully, and it's not a joke, this is serious." said Jerry Losquadro, North Hempstead Highway superintendent.
North Hempstead town will be covering 600 miles of road with plows and sand during the storm.
Temperatures are also expected to plummet this weekend, and the cold mixed with the snow will make it difficult to melt the ice.
"For last week's storm, we pretreated the roads with a brine solution that kept them from freezing. But this time it's too cold and so that will not be effective," said Jennifer DeSena, North Hempstead Town supervisor.
News 12 is told regular rock salt does not work as well in frigid temperatures, but other products can still melt snow and ice in sub zero weather.
Managers at hardware stores say be on the lookout for calcium chloride ice melt and for bags that say melts ice at negative 10 or negative 25 degrees.
Pretreating your sidewalk and driveway will help once the snow stops, and keep your cars off the road.
"We will be prepared. We just ask that people since it's coming on Sunday please plan to stay inside, plan to not go out on the roads on Monday," DeSena said.
The North Hempstead town supervisor says officials may declare a state of emergency depending on how bad the storm gets.
